Back

With smaller needles, cast on 53(57-61-65) sts.
Ribbing:  Row 1 (RS):  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.
Row 2:  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 1” from beg, end on WS.  Change to larger needles.
Establish Pat Sts:  Row 1 (RS):  Work Row 1 of Rib Pat over 13(15-17-19) sts, place marker, work Row 1 of Cable Pat over 27 sts, place marker, work Row 1 of Rib Pat to end.
Row 2:  Work Row 2 of Rib Pat to 1st marker, work Row 2 of Cable Pat to 2nd marker, work Row 2 of Rib Pat to end.  Work even in pats as established until piece measures 5(5½-6-6½)” from beg, end on WS.  Mark beg and end of last row for beg of armholes.  Work even until armholes measure 4(4½-5-5½)”, end on WS. 
Shape Shoulders:  Next Row (RS):  Bind off 15(16-16-18) sts, work until there are 23(25-29-29) sts on RH needle, sl these sts onto holder, work to end – 15(16-16-18) sts.
Button Placket:  Work even on these sts for 5 rows, end on WS.  Bind off.

Front

Work same as back until armholes measure 2(2½-3-3½)”, end on WS – 53(57-61-65) sts.
Shape Neck:  Next Row (RS):  Work 21(22-22-24) sts, sl center 11(13-17-17) sts onto holder, join another ball of yarn and work to end.  Working both sides at once, dec 1 st at each neck edge EVERY row 6 times.  Work even on 15(16-16-18) sts each side until armholes measure 4(4½-5-5½)”, end on RS.
Shape Shoulders:  Next Row (WS):  Bind off 15(16-16-18) sts of right shoulder;  work across 15(16-16-18) sts of left shoulder.
Buttonhole Placket:  Work even for 2 rows, end on WS.
Buttonhole Row (RS):  Work 3 sts, k2 tog, yo, work 4(5-5-7) sts, k2 tog, yo, work to end – 2 buttonholes made.  Work even for 3 rows, end on WS.  Bind off.

Sleeves

With smaller needles, cast on 27(29-29-31) sts.  Work even in ribbing same as back for 1”, end on WS.  Change to larger needles and work in Rib Pat, inc 1 st each end every 1(1-¾-¾)” 5(6-8-9) times, working incs in Rib Pat as sts become available – 37(41-45-49) sts.  Work even until sleeve measures 7(8-9-10)” from beg, end on WS.  Bind off.

Finishing

Sew right shoulder seam.
Neckband:  With RS facing, using smaller needles, beg at left shoulder, pick up and k16(16-14-14) sts along left front neck edge, k11(13-17-17) sts from front holder, pick up and k12(12-10-10) sts along right front neck edge, k23(25-29-29) sts from back holder, pick up and k5 sts along left back neck edge – 67(71-75-75) sts.  Beg with Row 2, work in ribbing same as back for 3 rows.
Buttonhole Row (RS):  Work 3 sts, k2 tog, yo, work to end.  Work even for 3 more rows, end on WS.  Bind off in ribbing.  Sew buttons to button placket opposite buttonholes.  Button shoulder tog.  Sew on sleeves between markers working through double thickness of plackets on left sleeve.  Sew side and sleeve seams.

Hat


Cable Pattern for hat (Multiple of 18 sts + 2)

Row 1 (RS):  * P2, k5, p2, k9, rep from * across, end p2.
Row 2:  K2, * p9, k2, p5, k2, rep from * across.
Row 3:  * P2, k5, p2, CB6, k3 rep from * across, end p2.
Row 4:  K2, * p9, k2, p1, k3, p1, k2, rep from * across.
Row 5:  Rep Row 1.
Row 6:  Rep Row 2.
Row 7:  * P2, k5, p2, k3, CF6, rep from * across end p2.
